MTD for ITSA
Within the bookkeepers community, this is the eye rolling moment now
Oh my lord another mentioning of MTD for ITSA, everyone’s tired hearing about it by now, especially with not all information provided by the government.
We have been on various webinars, prepared by @HMRC @Xero @Dext @Freeagent @Hammock @Quickbooks @Limebooks @Coconut and various others, their software is ready for 2024.
Does it apply to you and/or your business?
You must meet the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requirements from 6 April 2024 if all of the following apply, you:
- are an individual
- are registered for Self Assessment (find out more about registering and sending a Self Assessment tax return)
- were self-employed or collecting property income before 6 April 2023
- have a qualifying income of more than £10,000
The dates are different for partnerships or if you become a landlord or sole trader after 6 April 2023.
What will happen by 6 April 2024
- You need to submit your Self Assessment tax return for 2022 to 2023 by 31 January 2024.
- HMRC will review your return and check if your qualifying income is more than £10,000.
- If it is, they will write to you and confirm that you must meet the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requirements by 6 April 2024. If you have an agent, they can meet the requirements on your behalf.
- You or your agent must find software that’s compatible with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and authorise it.
- You or your agent must sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.
Then you’ll make your first submission in August 2024.
There are so many additional information you will need, but, get yourself ready with a software of your choice. We work with XERO and we love XERO, but we all drive different cars, we can’t all use the same software. Familiar yourself with this software, give yourself a year of practice and you’ll be ready for 2024.
All the best.
